Still a very popular type of braces, traditional metal braces are brackets attached to patients’ teeth and held together with an arch wire. Your orthodontist in Grand Rapids will attach the bracket to a specific spot on your tooth in such a way that, when your treatment is complete, the arch wire will appear perfectly straight. The arch wire is attached to the brackets using tiny rubber bands called ligatures. You can choose whatever colors you want, which makes these braces fun for holidays or special events.
Braces can correct a wide variety of problems, some of which might even be causing speech impediments. Other conditions include crossbites, underbites, overbites, gaps, and overcrowding.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
As you read ahead, keep in mind that each patient is different. Even though something is listed below, you personally may never experience it throughout your entire braces treatment.
- After an adjustment, you may experience some soreness or aching in the mouth.
- Your orthodontist will advise against eating certain foods, as they can get caught in your braces or cause one of the brackets to come off.
- Brackets may irritate your gums when they are first put on. Your orthodontist will provide you with orthodontic wax to help this problem.
- Brush, brush, brush your teeth! One of the most important things to remember is to brush your teeth often when having braces. There are so many more crevices for food and bacteria to hide.
